The University of Connecticut Department of Athletics  will not field a football team this fall.

UConn, which is an independent after leaving the American Athletic Conference at the end of last year, had already lost 2020 games against Illinois, Indiana, Maine and Mississippi because of cancelations by  those schools’ respective conferences. And there was  uncertainty whether Connecticut would still have games against North Carolina and Virginia.

UConn is joining the Big East in all sports besides football, men’s and women’s ice hockey and rowing. Team members will remain enrolled in classes, either virtually or in person, as full-time students at UConn.   The team has been on campus since early July with no ]athletes testing positive for coronavirus.
