There is scant hope for progress in Tulsa’s city government in the next four years.

On November 3, voters in Council Districts 5, 6 and 7 will decide who will represent them.

There are six candidates and only two seem to be a genuine conservatives.

Justin Van Kirk, a conservative Republican, is running against Councilor Lori Decter-Wright, a liberal Democrat.

Van Kirk is a conservative who attends LifeChurch. He wants to bring a free market approach to city government.

Decter-Wright cares more about pleasing downtown business interests than promoting common sense government in District 7. She is a strong supporter of special rights for homosexuals and that is reflected in her votes on the Council.

In the race for District 5, Councilor Cass Fahler has a resume that looks conservative but he too supported the Gay Pride Parade. His opponent, Micky Arthrell, is much worse than Fahler. He is an outspoken proponent for special rights for homosexuals.

In District 6, Republican Christian Bengel faces Democrat Councilor Connie Dotson.

Bengel was a Tulsa County Reserve Sheriff’s Deputy and has a deep background in business. His expertise would prove valuable as Tulsa spends tax money on various projects.

Dotson has voted for tax increases, government borrowing and the expansion of government.

The Tulsa Beacon endorses Justin Van Kirk in the race for Tulsa City Council District 7.

The Tulsa Beacon endorses Christian Bengel in Tulsa City Council District 6. They can make a difference if they can persuade other councilors to prioritize the needs of the people rather than the chamber and powerful business people who work behind the scenes.
