It’s been said that “you can’t tell the horses from the jockeys without a scorecard” and that is particularly true of the horde of Democrats who are running or thinking about running against Donald Trump in 2020.
Here’s a rundown with a few thoughts.
- U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, represents Youngstown and Akron. He is all in for labor unions and almost challenged Nancy Pelosi for the speakership in 2017.
- Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, replaced Hillary Clinton in the Senate in 2009. She previously was in the U.S. House. She is all in for #MeToo. She used to claim to be a conservative Democrat but not anymore. She criticized Bill Clinton for his sexual exploits.
- Beto O’Rouke is a Democrat from Texas who used to be in the U.S. House. In 2018, he lost a Senate race to Republican Ted Cruz. He is all in for the Green New Deal, reparations and socialized medicine.
- John Hickenlooper is the former governor of Colorado. A former mayor of Denver, he owns a brewery and supports national legalization of recreational marijuana. He talks like a conservative but is all in for progressive issues.
- Gov. Jay Inslee, D-Washington, is in his second term in one of the most liberal states in the Union. He is chairman of the Democratic Governors Association. He is all in for climate change (translation: a carbon tax).
- Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, is a self-described socialist Democrat. He came in second in the Democrat primary behind Hillary Clinton in 2016. Sanders is all in for redistribution of wealth, free medical treatment for all, a $15/hour minimum wage and equal rights for women (and homosexuals).
- Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, has been in the Senate since 2007. She wants to be seen as a mildly progressive Midwesterner. She showed her progressive teeth when she blasted Justice Brett Kavanaugh in his confirmation hearings. She is all in on treating her staff like second-class citizens.
- Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, is affectionately known as “Pocahontas” because she falsely claimed a Cherokee heritage. A professor at “prestigious” Harvard Law School, she wants an “ultra-millionaire tax” on people worth more than $50 million. She is all in on making everyone (except white men) equal. She wants to impeach President Trump.
- Sen. Kamala Harris, D-California, is in her first term after being elected in 2016. The ex-prosecutor is a “woman of color” and has sought political help from Hillary Clinton. She is all in on the extreme environmental and social positions in California (home of “fruits and nuts”).
- Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a Democrat in South Bend, Indiana, is a proud homosexual married to his boyfriend. A millennial scholar, he is enlisting help from Obama supporters to separate from the Democrat Old Guard. He is all in transforming America into what he wants (like Obama).
- Mayor Julian Castro (no relation to Fidel – I think) was the mayor of San Antonio and was secretary of Housing and Urban Development under (who else?) Obama. He is all in on open borders.
- John Delaney is a former congressman from Maryland. He is all in on name recognition.
- U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, has been in the House since 2013. She was in the military and served in Iraq. She supported Sanders in 2016. She is all in for a noninterventionist foreign policy.
- Andrew Yang is a tech businessman. He is all in for giving everyone a $1,000 a month in income.
- Marianne Williamson is a public speaker and author. She is all in for “a search for higher wisdom.”
- Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, was the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey. He is all in on making recreational marijuana legal, Medicare for all and a “universal nest egg” for all children.
- Former Vice President Joe (How about a hug?) Biden is running but he won’t admit it yet. He’s 78 and he has not been endorsed by Obama. Biden is all in for pretending to be for the “working man” (except for coal miners and oil workers).
- Gov. Steve Bullock of Montana wants campaign finance reform (probably because he can’t raise any money). He is all in for getting rid of President Trump.
Some other minor candidates and who probably won’t run are Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio; U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-California; former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe; U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Massachusetts; Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colorado; Stacey Abrams, unsuccessful candidate for governor in Georgia; former U.S. Sen. Mike Gavel, 88, D-Alaska; New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio; billionaire Mike Bloomberg; former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder; former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu; New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo; Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti; former Sen. Hillary Clinton; porn lawyer Michael Avenatti; California businessman tom Steyer; and Howard Schultz, former CEO of Starbucks, who was a Democrat but would run as an Independent.
