In totalitarian governments, high-ranking officials try to control every aspect of peoples’ lives. That was the case for eight years in America when ex-President Obama and his wife Michelle tried to mandate changes in the diets of school children.
Through presidential mandates, the Obamas forced public schools to offer the food they chose. Any variance had to be approved by federal bureaucrats in a costly and time-consuming process.
Besides the unnecessary bureaucracy, kids didn’t like the food and therefore wouldn’t eat it. There was great waste. Like most liberal ideas, there was a grain of truth but the school lunch plan didn’t work.
School children down South didn’t take to whole-grain grits or biscuits. They just tossed them in the trash. Other districts had similar problems with whole grain pasta and tortillas.
President Trump, as promised, is changing that scenario.
Under Trump, schools will no longer has to serve only whole grains. Health officials say half-grains are all that are needed. And no schools will have to navigate federal policies to figure out what is for lunch.
Low-fat chocolate milk is back on the approved list. Michelle Obama mandated that only fat-free milk be served. Limits on sodium have been tossed and those have become suggested limits.
Liberal-controlled groups like the American Heart Association are livid. They, like the Obamas, want to tell our children and us what we can and can’t eat.
It’s estimated that as many as 30 million children get a free government-supplied lunch (and breakfast) every school day. Our nation has helped children from poor families with free lunches for decades and that is a credit to our charity.
But Trump has it right. Local districts should decide what food to serve in the cafeterias and not a federal bureaucrat.
